October is Dyslexia Awareness Month
October is Dyslexia month and Caroline Erdos, Ph.D., S-LP (C), is sharing helpful content for teachers, parents and students. Thank you Dr. Erdos for sharing your expertise on dyslexia with the Reading Bear.
October is Dyslexia Awareness Month. Five to twenty percent of children have dyslexia. That’s up to 4-5 students per class. Yet, most teachers have not been trained in university to identify, support, or effectively teach students who have dyslexia to read.
Dyslexia is a specific learning disability that is neurobiological in origin. It is characterized by difficulties with accurate and/or fluent word recognition and by poor spelling and decoding abilities. Children with reading difficulties require the same evidence-based instruction as their peers. Furthermore, whether the difficulty is due to developmental dyslexia or other factors, the instruction and intervention required are the same.
